Java 27 (JDK 27) became generally available on 15 September 2026, as announced on Inside.java. It contains nine JEPs (JDK Enhancement Proposals). Oracle will provide updates to JDK 27 until March 2027, when JDK 28 replaces it. Java 25 remains the current long-term support (LTS) version.
What is in Java 27
The nine JEPs listed in the announcement:
- JEP 523: Make G1 the default garbage collector in all environments
- JEP 534: Compact object headers by default
- JEP 527: Post-quantum hybrid key exchange for TLS 1.3
- JEP 536: JFR in-process data redaction
- JEP 538: PEM encodings of cryptographic objects (third preview)
- JEP 532: Primitive types in patterns, instanceof and switch (fifth preview)
- JEP 531: Lazy constants (third preview)
- JEP 533: Structured concurrency (seventh preview)
- JEP 537: Vector API (12th incubator)
“Preview” and “incubator” features are not final. You must switch them on with a flag, and they may still change.
What this means for students and freshers
This section is our view, not part of the announcement.
Most companies build on LTS versions, so in interviews and projects you are far more likely to meet Java 17, 21 or 25 than Java 27. Learn modern Java on an LTS version first, with Spring Boot and Hibernate on top.
Two changes in this release are still useful to understand. Garbage collection (JEP 523) is a common interview topic, and knowing that G1 is now the default everywhere shows you follow the platform. Compact object headers (JEP 534) reduce the memory each object uses, which helps explain why Java keeps getting more efficient.
