Google Cloud’s release notes list two BigQuery AI functions as generally available: AI.CHUNK_DOCUMENT (entry dated 21 October 2026) and AI.TRANSLATE (entry dated 22 October 2026). Here are the confirmed facts from Google Cloud, followed by our view for data analytics learners.
Confirmed facts (from Google Cloud)
- AI.TRANSLATE translates text strings between languages. It supports standard Neural Machine Translation workloads and Translation LLM capabilities. Google lists the status as generally available.
- AI.CHUNK_DOCUMENT is a table-valued function that splits unstructured documents into semantically coherent text chunks, designed for vector embeddings and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflows. Google lists the status as generally available.
- Both entries are in Google’s rolling release notes. Read the BigQuery documentation for syntax, limits and pricing before you use either function in a project.
Our view: what this means for data analytics learners
Analysts already work in SQL, so these functions show how AI fits into a data pipeline. The useful question is not whether a function runs. It is what goes in, and what comes out.
AI.CHUNK_DOCUMENT is a preprocessing step. Before a document can be searched with embeddings, it has to be cut into pieces. Chunk size changes what a search can find: a chunk that is too short loses context, and one that is too long dilutes the answer. Learn why before you trust the output.
AI.TRANSLATE suits multilingual feedback, such as customer reviews or survey answers written in several languages. Translate first, then count themes in one language, and keep the original text so you can check a sample of translations by hand.
A simple exercise: take 50 short customer comments in a table, translate them with a function or tool of your choice, and count the top three themes before and after. Write down one case where the translation changed the meaning.
