If you are choosing between data analytics and data science, the two courses share many tools, but they prepare you for different kinds of work. This guide explains the difference so you can choose with confidence.
What a data analyst does
A data analyst works with existing data to answer business questions. Common tasks include cleaning data in Excel or SQL, building dashboards in Power BI or Tableau, and explaining what the numbers mean to managers. Most analysts start in reporting and move into more advanced work over time.
Our Data Analytics course covers Microsoft Excel, MySQL and SQL, Python for data analysis, Power BI, Tableau, data visualisation and a Gen AI module, over 5 months.
What a data scientist does
A data scientist goes a step further. They build models that predict outcomes or group similar items, and they test whether those models are reliable. The work involves more statistics, more programming and machine learning.
Our Data Science course covers Python for data science, SQL, statistics, machine learning, Power BI and Tableau, plus a Gen AI module.
Which one suits you?
Choose data analytics if:
- You enjoy finding patterns in data and presenting them clearly.
- You want to start with business reporting and dashboards.
- You are new to programming, or you prefer tools over coding.
Choose data science if:
- You are comfortable with maths and statistics, or want to build that skill.
- You want to work on models and predictions.
- You are happy to write more Python code.
Both paths share the same starting point
Both courses use SQL, Python and visualisation tools. If you are unsure, start with the course that matches your current skills, then build the other skills after you get your first role.
