Microsoft has published its Power BI October 2026 Feature Summary on the official Power BI Updates Blog. Here is what changed, followed by what it means for anyone learning data analytics.
Confirmed facts (from Microsoft’s post)
- Gantt chart (Preview): a new core visual that shows tasks and progress on a time-based axis, with milestones, extra columns such as owner or status, and a zoom axis. It is switched on under File > Options and settings > Options > Preview features in Power BI Desktop.
- List slicer dropdown (Preview): a dropdown mode for long lists, a “Show selected first” option, and selections shown as pills that can be removed with one click.
- Chart plot area background colour (Generally Available): bar, column, line, area, combo, ribbon, waterfall and scatter charts can now use a single fill colour or conditional formatting for the plot area.
- Auto-expand hierarchy axis (Generally Available): bar, column and line charts can auto-expand when more than one column is on the axis, and the axis now works with field parameters.
- Personal bookmarks keep column widths (Generally Available).
- Report authoring with custom visuals (Generally Available): the Power BI Report Authoring skill for Fabric extends natural-language report building to custom visuals.
- Semantic models: capacity usage is now reported continuously during long background operations, so surge protection reacts sooner. No settings change is needed.
Our view: what this means for data analytics learners
The field parameter and auto-expand changes are worth practising first. Interviewers often ask freshers to build one chart that lets a manager switch between country, segment and product. With field parameters on the axis, that is now simpler to build and easier to explain.
Conditional formatting on the plot area is a small change, but it helps you highlight a target or a drop in a way a business user notices quickly. Use it with care: one clear highlight beats a colourful chart.
The Gantt chart and the slicer dropdown are still in preview, so learn them, but do not rely on them in a portfolio project that others must open on an older version. The AI report-authoring features are a reminder that tools can now draft visuals for you. The skill that still sets candidates apart is knowing which chart answers the business question and explaining why.
A simple exercise: take a sales dataset, build one page with a field-parameter chart and a matrix that both follow the same slicer, and write three lines on what the page shows.
